Chapel Hill/Lincoln High 2018 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Chapel Hill, NC – Five former star athletes, representing Lincoln High School and Chapel Hill High School, have been selected as the Class of 2018 inductees for the Chapel Hill/Lincoln High School Hall of Fame. Lincoln High was the town’s only all-Black High School before desegregation.

The five individuals will be honored during an induction banquet on Saturday, April 28 at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill High School cafeteria.

Chapel Hill/Lincoln High School Hall of Fame Class of 2018:

James Atwater, Jr. – Football (Lincoln High School 1958)

James Atwater was a fullback on the 1957 and 1958 undefeated Lincoln High School football teams. He earned a trip to the Shrine Bowl in 1958 with his scoring skills. He went on to compete at Maryland State (now Maryland Eastern Shore).

Rick Bynum – Football, Player and Coach (Chapel Hill High School 1975)

Rick Bynum led the Tiger football team during the 1973 and 1974 seasons to a record of 15-5. He earned Player of the Week Honors after rushing for 135 yards and two touchdowns and completing passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns in one game to set a school record. He was All-Conference and Durham Morning Herald All-Area in 1973 and 1974,being the first Tiger to have over 1,000 yards passing in a season, and totaled 2,700 over his career. He was also a two-time lettermen in basketball. Bynum went on to compete at NC A&T. He then returned to Chapel Hill High School to coach numerous All-Conference players at quarterback and running back over a 26-year career.

Peter Blackwell Cloutier – Swimming (Chapel Hill High School 1992)

Peter Blackwell Cloutier was a three time letter winner in swimming at Chapel Hill High. He won State titles in both the 100 and 200 freestyle in 1991 and 1992. His 1992 time in the 200 freestyle earned him All-American Honors and was an NCHSAA record that stood for nine years. He was a member of four relay teams that won State titles the 400 freestyle relay in 1990 and 1992, and the 200 medley relay in 1991 and 1992. Cloutier went on to compete a UNC-CH.

Tiara Headen – Basketball/Volleyball (Chapel Hill High School 2004)

Tiara Headen was a four-year All-Conference performer on the Women’s basketball team, who earn All-State Honors her senior year. Headen was also an important member of the volleyball team. She averaged 17.7 points per game during her senior season, scoring more than 1,300 points during her career at CHHS.  She went on to play college basketball at Iona.

Carly Smith – Swimming (Chapel Hill High School 2009)

Cary Smith was a four-time 4-A high school state champion in the 100-yard backstroke. She lettered in swimming at CHHS all four years and was the most valuable swimmer for her high school team for three years, earning rookie of the year honors her freshman season. Smith was named PAC-6 Swimmer of the Year in 2007 and is the NCHSAA record holder in the 100-yard backstroke, being just the second person in NCHSAA history to both break a state record in an event and win it all four years of high school. She was the team captain of the 2007-08 4-A Chapel Hill High state championship team. She was an All-American in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle and on 400-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay teams. Smith was a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier.
