Golfing With a Purpose: George Floyd Memorial Center’s First Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Raleigh, NC – During the last two years since the tragic and senseless killing of George Perry Floyd, Jr., his family in his birth state of North Carolina has been organizing and doing the thoughtful groundwork to establish a physical center to honor his life and legacy – The George Floyd Memorial Center (GFMC). The goal of the Center is to forge a path to deeper understanding between members of the community and to encourage personal growth, healing, and emotional and financial prosperity for families.

georgeTo that end and expanding on the virtual 5/25 Day of Enlightenment that kicked off in 2021, this year the GFMC is expanding its fundraising efforts by adding to 5/25 D.O.E. a “Weekend of Enlightenment” that will include a charity golf tournament on Friday, May 27 beginning at 7:30 a.m. for check-in with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, NC (2511 Kildaire Farm Rd., Cary, NC 27511).

The golf tournament is a Shotgun Scramble and will include:
  • Golf cart and range practice balls
  • One raffle ticket
  • Breakfast and lunch
  • On course contests
  • Trophies and awards will go to the first, second, and third-place teams
  • 19th hole celebration

For those interested in attending some or all parts of the GFMC “Weekend Of Enlightenment”, which begin on 5/25, the Day of Enlightenment and a day of remembrance, go to the ‘Upcoming Events’ section on www.georgefloydmc.org to purchase tickets, become a sponsor, or make a donation.

“Including a golf tournament as part of the Weekend Of Enlightenment not only gets us out of our home offices, it gets us out on the golf course where we can take in the fresh air and really connect with each other,” said Thomas McLaurin, Executive Director, GFMC, and George’s first cousin. “It’s that connection and opportunity to come together for a cause greater than ourselves, along with some friendly competition, that is really impactful, and we’ll have a lot of fun doing it.”

The GFMC “Weekend of Enlightenment” includes:
  • 5/25 Day of Enlightenment Virtual Remembrance Experience from 11- 12:30; $FREE
  • 5/27 Golf tournament at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, NC; $150
  • 5/28 Conference speakers on health, wealth, and education; $25

To register for the virtual events and/or the golf tournament, or to make a donation,  go to www.georgefloydmc.org.

The funds raised through the support of golfers, sponsors, and donors will be used towards staffing, programming, and building the Center and begin the far-reaching programming for the community, and eventually the nation and world.

Sponsorships for the golf tournament range between $150 for a hole to $3,000. If you’re interested in becoming a sponsor of the golf tournament or the GFMC “Weekend of Enlightenment” you can do so on the center’s website at www.georgefloydmc.org or you can contact Ashley Carrington on behalf of the GFMC at Carringtonanc@gmail.com.
