Celebrating the holiday season and Durham’s diversity, African American Dance Ensemble’s (AADE) annual Kwanzaa celebration is a time to enjoy family, community, and culture.

KwanzaaFest
Dr. Chuck Davis

Kwanzaa itself is a seven-day holiday that celebrates a different principle each day. AADE’s Kwanzaafest takes place on

the seventh day of Kwanzaa, which is dedicated to Imani, or faith.

There will be food, dancing, face painting, drum classes, and a marketplace filled with vendors and community groups.

The African American Dance Ensemble

On January 1, 1985, Dr. Charles “Chuck” Davis and the African American Dance Ensemble brought the Kwanzaa Celebration to the city of Durham. This year will be the first year without Baba Chuck as he transitioned on May 14, 2017. We must continue his legacy.

A family fun time to celebrate Culture and Community! Enjoy good food, many different vendors, Dancing, Children’s Village and of Course – The African American Dance Ensemble!

All donated canned foods will be donated to a local charity!!!

Kwanzaa is FREE and Open to the Public.

Each season from 1980 to 1984 the Chuck Davis Dance Company was in residence with the American Dance Festival’s Community Services Program and each season the participants in this outreach program grew. By 1983 it had become obvious that there was a developing core of local dancers whose levels of proficiency were approaching those of the professionals from whom they were learning.
