@allie_capo Review: Kinky Boots Rips the Runway to the DPAC
Kinky Boots, A must see! Show stopping! Musical phenomenon! A Broadway musical based on the book written by four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell with music and lyrics by Grammy Award winning icon Cyndi Lauper. Kinky Boots will be at the DPAC from September 13th-18th as a part of the Encore Broadway at DPAC series.
Inspired by a true story, Charlie Price played by Elon graduate Adam Kaplan leaves his family shoe factory and starts a new life in London. Due to a death in the family, he quickly finds himself back at the factory. With business going downhill he realizes that he is the only hope for keeping the factory from hitting rock bottom. One day Charlie encounters Lola who is played by Fayetteville, North Carolina native J. Harrison Ghee, a drag Queen who eventually gives Charlie the idea to create a line of high-heeled boots for men. Throughout their journey, they discover how they have more in common than they thought. Will the teamwork of these two succeed? Will the blueprint of this new creation be enough to change things around at the factory?
Kinky Boots has earned 13 nominations and 6 Tony wins, including Best Score and Best Musical. In 2016, it won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical. The musical’s cast album reached number one on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart and the previous production have had extended runs in Toronto and Korea.
This is a phenomenal production with engaging acts and music that keeps the audience on their feet. With an underline message, this musical highlights the struggles of one being accepted by society when they are not considered the norm.
