Lady Wolfpack Roll Past UMES 77-58
Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina State University Wolfpack women’s basketball team defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 77-58 Monday night in Reynolds Coliseum. The game marks the first ever meeting between the ACC powerhouse and the Mid-Eastern Atlantic foe and also brings the Pack to their sixth straight 4-0 start to a season. Maryland Eastern Shore drops to a 2-2 record.
The Wolfpack jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, going up 19-7 in the first quarter thanks to a dominating performance by Chelsea Nelson. Nelson, a 6’ 2” junior from Antioch, Tenn. led the pack in first quarter scoring with 10 points and registering 7 rebounds. Nelson would finish the game with a double-double, scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds, as well as two assists while senior Guard, Miah Spencer collected six assists and 10 points.
Eastern Shore was held to a long four minute scoreless drought in the first quarter as the Wolfpack stepped up their offensive play, draining a pair of three pointers and a three point foul shot.
The Pack struggled defensively throughout the game, however, as they were out rebounded by the Hawks 41-39. State also allowed UMES Guard, Mariah McCoy to go 6-8 from beyond the arc and put up 24 total points. NC State head coach Wes Moore commented on the defensive performance saying, “We wanted to do a better job on the boards. We got out rebounded. There were some bright spots on the offensive end, but defensively we’ve got to grow up in a hurry because our schedule is fixing to get whole a lot tougher.”
The Wolfpack will look to shake off the defensive rust and continue their undefeated campaign in the Paradise Jam tournament starting on Thursday as they take on Kansas State in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
