Young’s Career Day Leads Blue Devils Past Army 34-14
DURHAM, NC – Duke wide receiver Aaron Young has a career-day, amassing 114 receiving yards, as the Blue Devils defeated Army West Point 34-14.
Duke (1-0) dominated the game early by being the more physical team from the beginning. On Army’s first possession of the game, Blue Devils defensive end Victor Dimukeje made a big hit and forced a fumble to give Duke possession at the Army 32-yard line.
Duke would struggle on the next possession, only getting a Collin Wareham 25-yard field goal to go up 3-0.
Duke would get a rushing touchdown from both Brittain Brown (12 yards) and Daniel Jones (one yard) to take a 17-0 lead in to the half.
Army (0-1) only threw the ball 34 times last season but managed to throw 21 times tonight. Kelvin Hopkins Jr made 10 of his 21 passing attempts, throwing for 197 yards and a touchdown.
The Black Knights came out in the third quarter and got two touchdowns on their first three drives to cut the score to 24-14.
Duke would get a late touchdown on a touch pass from Daniel Jones to receiver Aaron Young for a 25-yard touchdown. Jones finished the game 13-for-17, 197 yards and one touchdown. Young finished the game with four catches, 114 yards and a touchdown.
The Blue Devils kicked a field goal late to head in to the weekend undefeated, winning 34-14.
Young mentioned after the game that it has been a big focus among the offense to be “more explosive” in games as far as making big plays.
Jones piggybacked on that statement, adding that it was really good to see [the explosive plays] that materialized tonight.
Duke (1-0, 0-0 ACC) will head to Illinois next week to take on Northwestern at noon.
