NCCU Football Soars Above Howard University Bison 40-35

The North Carolina Central University Eagles defeated the Howard University Bison 40-35. Quarterback Chauncey Caldwell went 24-38 passing for 311 yards and 3 passing touchdowns. Caldwell also rushed 20 times for 153 yards and 1 touchdown.

Caldwell credited preparation to the performance he had.

“This summer and last spring I just completely bought into the offense. Bought in with my coaches. Spent countless hours with my OC and quarterback coach…I spent so much time putting so much work in and it’s starting to pay off,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell did not start in the prior game which resulted in a 14-55 lost to Florida A&M University. When asked about the quarterback change, head coach Granville Eastman said,

“He (Caldwell) had shown to have the best command in executing the assignments beginning from Tuesday and that rolled into Wednesday. Thursday was a little bit sluggish. Came out Friday, had an excellent focus. By far the lead quarterback from the beginning of the week all the way to the end of the week,” said Eastman.

Even though the Eagles’ defense allowed 35 points and 598 yards of total offense, sophomore defensive back Marcus Martin came up with an interception in the end zone with 0:06 left in the game. That interception was Martin’s first career interception. Martin knew the ball was coming his way the entire time.

“Number 12 was balling all game. So they wanted him in the crucial moment. So I knew it was coming my way and I was on him,” said Martin.

The Bison (1-3, 1-1 MEAC) play Delaware State University at home next Saturday. The Eagles (2-3, 1-1 MEAC) have bye week this upcoming week. Following the bye week the Eagles have an away game at Norfolk State University on Saturday, October 20th.
