Durham Police Department Opens New Headquarters

Durham, NC – Since 1991, the heart of Durham’s Police Department has been located in the central part of downtown at 505 W. Chapel Hill Street. Twenty-seven years later, they are welcoming a brand new three story headquarters at 602 East Main Street.  On a rainy October 20th, there was a community event to present the new building, promote different units of the department such as the K-9 unit and Durham Police Athletic League and provide open tours. There were performances by Elegance Dance Troupe, public safety trainings, face painting for the kids and food trucks.

“We are looking to expand to better help our community and growing police department,” says Wil Glenn, Public Affairs Manager with Durham Police Department. “The construction of the new police station began in July 2016.”

The new headquarters complex includes all existing features and houses District 5 operations and the Forensic Services Unit. Currently, there are five district sub-stations located throughout the city.

The growing department has a total of 380 employees. This number includes 298 police staff and 82 emergency communications staff. The building also includes a multi-purpose room that includes technology that will allow broadcasting through the Durham Television Network.

During the tour, all floors of the police station including the new creative design, were explored. The tour was led by Officer E. P. Sheppard, which was a detailed tour of the K-9 units, forensics department, Police Chief’s offices, the new 911 center and main floor for visitors.

“We are happy to have a better updated facility to communicate and properly help the citizens of Durham” says Sheppard.
