Larry Fedora Fired From North Carolina
According to multiple sources, the University of North Carolina has relieved Larry Fedora of his head coaching duties as of Sunday morning.
The news comes a day after the Tar Heels were defeated by the North Carolina State Wolfpack at home in overtime after leading for the majority of the game. The Tar Heels finished the season with a 2-9 record.
Fedora, who led his team to the 2015 ACC Championship game, only managed to win five games in the last two years. The Texas-native was 45-43 in his seven years in Chapel Hill.
The university will have to swallow a massive $12 million dollar buyout in wake of the decision that was made on Sunday morning.
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham released a statement explaining his tough decision.
“We appreciate all that Larry Fedora has done for us over the last seven years — coming to Carolina in the midst of an NCAA case and bringing stability to our football program when we most needed it. Despite injuries, despite setbacks and hardships, Larry never made excuses. He focused his teams on overcoming adversity, and I deeply respect the way he persevered and led our program each day with integrity through some tough times. This was not an easy decision because of the deep affinity I have for Larry. It simply is time to take our football program in a new direction.”
Rumors are that former Texas head coach Mack Brown is an early candidate to replace Fedora.
