Morrisville, NC – Renee Watts, a Licensed Cosmetologist, Certified Hair Practitioner, Hair Loss and Replacement Specialist, and Certified DevaCurl inspired stylist, has over 20 years of experience in the hair styling industry. She is also the founder and CEO of two successful businesses, Believe Salon and Believe Hair Restoration Health & Wellness Clinic, located in Morrisville, NC. Renee has established herself as “the stylist with growing hands” and chooses to serve beyond the traditional role of simply styling hair to actually caring for the scalp and hair strands. In 2018, she launched a product line, Believe, which focuses on hair, scalp and beard treatments. I had the opportunity to speak in depth with Renee about her passion for the overall health and well-being of her clients and how it pertains to their hair health.

Renee what attracted you to the beauty profession, particularly hair styling?

Hair styling is an art and I enjoy creating beautiful feelings and images for others. We all love to look and feel beautiful, and often times your hair can change your image and provide you that extra boost to make you feel good inside. Your hair is a bold statement and tells a story about yourself. A hairstyle can provide you the confidence to feel sexy. I view hair styling as an art.

Do you feel you are making the impact you desire with clients as you focus on their health and wellness as a hair stylist?

Yes, I enjoy impacting the lives of others. It’s fulfilling to know that your work can change someone’s day or put a smile on their face when they look in the mirror or see a reflection of themselves. I don’t only style hair but teach proper regiments to continue to achieve healthy hair. I know I’m making an impact because my clients and I witness great results over time.

When did you know it was time to serve beyond the traditional hair styling role?

I knew it was time when I could no longer achieve the styles some of my clients wanted due to scalp and hair issues, which was linked to their health issues. I had an increase in clients who were losing hair from cancer, alopecia, and psoriasis. I knew it was time to no longer limit myself to styling, but step into an arena of hair care that provided the opportunity to restore my client’s happiness, self-imagine, confidence, and health. To me, it’s bigger than just restoring the scalp and hair. I am in the business of restoring the pieces of themselves that others may feel they lost, and I believe in a holistic approach to treatment. Actually styling the hair is the icing on the cake. There is significance in a healthy lifestyle, which leads to a healthy scalp, which then leads to a healthier strand of hair.

How are you helping others live a healthy & well life, and specifically how you are helping others in your community?

I provide continuous education to others by explaining the complexity of how hair, health, & wellness work together to achieve a healthy scalp. As a stylist, I provide my clients with the knowledge of basic hair care, cutting, coloring, treatments and styling. As a hair practitioner, I collaborate with my client’s dermatologist, assist with counseling, as well as supplemental hair, scalp and professional nutritional treatments. I am a living witness to what nutrition can do for our bodies and the affect it has on our hair. I experienced my own health issues that began to affect my hair and when I decided to change my overall lifestyle, I saw almost immediate changes in my hair. My clients began witnessing my change and decided to follow suit. They also experienced great results.

What’s next for Renee as a hair stylist serving beyond the traditional hair styling role and operating in the health & wellness arena?

I am looking to embark on a journey that will provide community education for proper hair care through educational webinars and presentations. I will also help educate other stylists on the correlation between our overall health and hair care; as well as collaborate with more healthcare professionals, such as dermatologist, trichologist, endocrinologist, and gastroenterologist. My mission is to link stylists with their client’s medical providers, and work together with the wellness community. I would like to be the bridge that helps transition the traditional salons into healthy hair clinics. I am also in the process of becoming a trichologist, and I plan to travel the globe speaking and teaching other stylists and clients the importance of their glory (hair). I am a firm believer that the body is your temple, which should be maintained through health and wellness. I believe a healthy temple starts with a beautiful crown which is your scalp and hair.
