Spectacular Magazine Host MLK and Black History Month Celebration in Durham Saturday

Durham, NC – The 17th Annual N.C. MLK Black History Month Parade & Block Party is Saturday, Feb 2 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Fayetteville St.

The Parade kicks off at noon, and will start at W. G. Pearson Elementary School (3501 Fayetteville Street), proceed 1.2 miles up Fayetteville Street and end at NCCU (corner of Lawson and Fayetteville Streets).

What’s Happening

This year’s theme is ‘Women, Power, and Revolution’ in honor of the 1998 essay written by Black Panther Party member Kathleen Clever.

Grand Marshals for the parade are Minnie Forte-Brown, the Immediate Past-President of the North Carolina School Boards Association, and Brenda Howerton, Durham County Board Commissioner and Immediate Past President of North Carolina Association of Counties.

GoDurham is the presenting sponsor of the 17th Annual NC MLK Black History Month Parade & Block Party. Other sponsors are Square 1 Bank, ABC11, Foxy 107/104, The Light 103.9, K97.5 and Bull City Inflatables.

The Block Party will feature DJ Mic Check, vendors, food trucks, bounce houses, face paintings, and much more. Some groups participating in the block party and/or the parade are:

  • Epic Cheer & Dance
  • Hillside HS Marching Band
