Next-Generation Leaders Celebrated At NCCU Honors Celebration
Durham, NC – North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will recognize the academic excellence of its students at the Seventieth Annual Honors Convocation on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 10:15 am, in the McDougald-McLendon Arena.
NCCU will confer commendations to students in numerous categories, including the university’s top honors – the Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence and the University Award for Academic Excellence. The university will also honor students receiving deans’ list recognition, departmental academic honors and membership in professional and academic honor societies.
The convocation speaker is Kian Brown, ’04, a personal branding expert and philanthropist, who is widely known for his civic engagement and commitment to the preservation of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
While at NCCU, Brown served as student government association president and senior vice president of the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments (ASG). Following graduation, he flourished in leadership roles as a program manager for Rush Communications.
In 2012, Brown became founding partner of Millennium Sports Management Group, a non-profit philanthropic-centered management firm tailored to helping professional athletes and public figures with their humanitarian efforts. He is also co-founder of the Urban Male Leadership Academy, an organization that empowers and mentors males of color.
In 2016, Brown was featured on the reality television digital series #TheGraduatesNYC, where he used his platform to advocate for HBCUs and transitioned to media coach and speaker. Currently, Brown is a part of the sophomore class of the Most Influential People of African Decent Under 40 (MIPAD).
An active NCCU alumnus, Brown serves as young alumni chair for the NCCU National Alumni Association Inc. Brown holds a bachelor’s degree in history education from NCCU.
