Nominations For 2020 “Heritage Calendar: Celebrating the NC African-American Experience” Now Open
AT&T* is accepting nominations of individuals to be honored in the 2020 edition of “The Heritage Calendar: Celebrating the NC African-American Experience.”
The project honors men and women of all races who have contributed significantly to the lives and experiences of African-Americans in the state. In addition to monthly honorees, the calendar highlights dates of significance in North Carolina and nationally.

Nominations for consideration for the 2020 edition must be received by April 5, 2019.
The 2019 Heritage Calendar’s honorees included:
- Dorothy Allen- Freeman, first African-American woman to be the executive director of a non-profit agency in North Carolina;
- Michael Bonner, 2nd grade teacher in Greenville, NC;
- Arabelle Bryant, for nearly three-quarters of a century, the teacher and librarian poured her heart into New Bern;
- Angela Caraway, founded The Caraway Foundation, a non-profit community empowerment organization that focuses on providing opportunities, via educational resources and health awareness;
- Thomas Day, prominent Civil War-era cabinet maker helped establish the NC furniture industry;
- Engine Four, North Carolina’s first integrated fire department;
- Dianne English, executive director of the non-profit Community Building Initiative (CBI);
- Howard Lee, overcame poverty and the deep-rooted racism of the Jim Crow south to become one of North Carolina’s most respected political and education leaders;
- Al McSurely, civil rights attorney dedicated to using the law and the legal process to defend people of color and turn the tables on governmental entities acting unconstitutionally;
- Orage Quarles III, the first African-American publisher and president of The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC;
- Virginia Tally, community advocate, peacemaker, bridge-builder, teacher, and educator;
- Ann Woodford, artist, entrepreneur, economic developer, and community activist.
