This Week’s WOW! Sonique Stephen: Designs Exude Edgy Yet Elegant Femininity
This Week’s Wow! Sonique Stephen is a NC-based women’s wear designer responsible for creating edgy yet elegant, thought-provoking attire for today’s fashion forward woman. Sonique Stephen started sewing at a very early age gaining experience over the years with multiple types of sewing machines and the ability to use them properly.
Stating that “sewing is not just a career but a passion,” we (SM) asked Sonique Stephen (SS) to tell us more about Sonique Stephen and Sonique Stephens Designs.
SS: Sonique Stephen’s main inspiration is born from the desire for understanding luxury combining beauty, sophistication and elegance in stylish designs. The versatile pieces come in a range of carefully considered clothing that work together to create great looks for a special day or evening. Each garment is beautifully finished to that highest quality using the most flatting fabrics making a woman feel chic, sophisticated and glamorous.
SM: Tell us about your latest collection.
SS: My latest was The Concrete and Rose 2018 Spring Prom Collection, which are full of individuality and style with simple, yet flattering silhouettes which exude edgy femininity.
SM: What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out?
SS: To the upcoming designers, it imperative that you pay close attention to details and value your work.
SM: What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
SS: My greatest strength would be the ability to produce and deliver creative and innovative designs at will. As for my greatest weakness, I have a hard time sharing a task with others because I’m always convinced that I can do it all on my own and that asking for help will be taken as a sign of weakness. This has led to me taking on projects that have overwhelmed me resulting in me being frustrated and angry. It hasn’t been easy learning to let go, but I’ve been working on trusting others and sharing the responsibilities for projects and as a result, have been able to really accomplish some incredible things. Thankfully I have focused on making my weakness my strengths.
SM: Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?
SS: In ten years, I plan to open a boutique/showroom.
SM: What do you enjoy doing other than designing?
SS: Other than designing for beautiful people, I enjoy spending quality time with my adorable son. He motives me to continue my journey as a fashion designer, and I am forever grateful.
SM: If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would you choose and why?
SS: Unfortunately, I have matured into a person that dismantles their idols. However, I believe that we can learn ideas and knowledge from multiple people.
