Stephanie Watts Announces Transfer Decision

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Former North Carolina Women’s Basketball guard Stephanie Watts will finish out her college basketball career with University of Southern California Trojans.

Watts announced the decision yesterday on her Instagram, however the Trojans haven’t released anything at the moment. She came into Carolina as a five-star recruit and competed in the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic.

In her three seasons, she played in 85 games, started 82, scored 1,320 points and her 239 3-pointers ranks her third on Carolina’s all-time 3-point list.

The Trojans (17-13) missed the 2019 NCAA Tournament and was one of the first four teams out according to ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme.

Watts will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer. Her scoring and experience will benefit the Trojans’ young backcourt.

With Paris Kea graduating, and Destinee Walker, Jocelyn Jones and Kennedy Boyd transferring, the only returning backcourt players who played significant minutes for the Tar Heels are senior guards Shayla Bennett and Taylor Koenen, and junior guard Leah Church.

Carolina signed Nia Daniels, Alexis Duckett and Kennady Tucker, who are all three-star guards; and they have Madinah Muhammad, a redshirt senior transfer guard who averaged 16.8 points per game at Ole Miss in 2017-18.

Also, first-year head coach Courtney Banghart hired Carrie Moore yesterday. Moore worked under Banghart as an assistant coach at Princeton for five seasons and will serve as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tar Heels.
