Hayti Meets Black Wall Street At Juneteenth: Time Capsule Burial & Juneteenth Processional

HaytiDurham, NC – Village of Wisdom and Hayti Heritage Center will kick off Spectacular Magazine’s 15th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at the Hayti Heritage Center (804 Old Fayetteville St.).

Village of Wisdom’s Black Genius Time Capsule Burial and Juneteenth Processional on Saturday June 15th coincides with the national Juneteenth holiday and the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans brought to the Americas. This half-day event is in celebration of Black Durham’s innovative achievements, unrelenting political struggle, and vibrancy despite 150 years of race-based oppression.

Village of Wisdom has been collecting both artifacts of Black Genius and radical visions for Black Liberation over this past year. This Juneteenth, VOW will receive final burial items, and close the lid on the time capsule, sending it deep into the Afro-future for our future 2050 generation to receive.

A Juneteenth processional re-connecting Hayti to downtown will commence immediately following the time capsule’s symbolic send-off. WD Hill Recreation Center’s and Healing with CAARE’s community dancers and drummers, Whistle Stop Tours’ re-enactors, VOW families and Hayti residents will walk from the historic Hayti District to kick-off Spectacular Magazine’s 15th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration downtown enlivening historic people, places including Black Wall Street, and events with African Diasporic dance, theater and musical arts all along the way and at the

Time Capsule Burial begins at 10:00 am, the Processional begins at 10:40 am, the 15th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration Opening Ceremony begins at 1:00 pm on E. Main St in downtown Durham.
