Luncheon & Golf Tournament Benefit Center Focused on Children, Families & Communities

Raleigh, NC – Each day, the Garner Road Community Center opens its doors to children, teens, and families with programs highlighting academic excellence, physical fitness, service, and leadership.  It also creates a gathering space for service groups that benefit the community. Now, for the third year, a luncheon and golf tournament fundraiser is planned to help benefit those programs and the young people they serve.

The Friends of Garner Road Community Center hosts the luncheon and tournament to bring attention to the work of the Center and to raise money for scholarships and future programming. The Women Teeing Off for a Better Tomorrow luncheon takes place at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 29th at the Hilton Garden Inn (131 Columbus Avenue; Cary, NC).

Using a golf theme, the luncheon enriches participants with music and motivational presentations. This year’s speaker is Diane Taylor, owner of Taylor Made Publishing, a full-service publishing company out of based in Greenville, NC that specializes in children’s, Christian and nonfiction works. Also, honorees at the luncheon include North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Jessica Holmes, Wake County Schools Superintendent Cathy Moore, Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown and NC Governor’s Chief of Staff Kristi Jones. This year’s luncheon theme challenges participants to “Write Your Own Story.”

The Dr. Antonio (Tony) Knox 2019 Golf Classic for Garner Road Community Center begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 29, at Lochmere Golf Club (2511 Kildaire Farm Road; Cary, NC). The tournament kicks off with a welcome reception at 6:30 pm, Friday, June 28th at the Garner Road Community Center (2235 Garner Road). Proceeds from the tournament benefit male mentoring programs sponsored by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Garner Road Community Center.

“We are excited about these events and the opportunity we have to make a difference in our community,” said Angela Knox, Luncheon Chairperson. “The work at Garner Road is important to the future of the Raleigh Community because the youth served at the Center are the future.”

The Garner Road Community Center (formerly YMCA) has a rich history of more than 65 years of providing physical, mental and spiritual services to all people in the community. In 2010, Garner Road became an independent center but continues to operate under the YMCA mission. Some of its programs include Keep‘em Off the Streets, Teen Achievers, New Images Choir, Before and After School Care, Summer Camp, Miss Garner Road Character Pageant, Youth in Government and Sports.
