The Chavis League’s origins trace back to its roots at Halifax Community Center beginning in the early to mid-1970s. Games were played at Halifax for four or five years then moved to Millbrook for one year before settling at Chavis Community Center in the late ’70s.
With Cleo Leach at the helm, the league became sanctioned by the NCAA. The league was so popular that it outgrew Chavis and moved to Ligon Middle School, then Carnage Middle School, and finally to Saint Augustine’s University in 1984 where the games have been played ever since. During the ’80s the league was heralded by national publications as one of the best summer leagues on the East Coast.
Sponsored by the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, the Chavis League has featured NBA and collegiate standouts over the years. Jerry Stackhouse, Donald Williams, Rodney Rogers, Rasheed Wallace, Tom Gugliotta, Johnny Dawkins, Elton Brand, Rodney Monroe, Vince Carter, Flip Murray, and even 2010 No. 1 draft pick John Wall are just a few who have all played in the League.
