NC State’s Konig to Compete With Canadian National Team
Toronto, Ontario – Rising senior Aislinn Konig of the NC State women’s basketball team has been called up by Canada Basketball to compete with the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team at the Lima (Peru) 2019 Pan American Games, the organization announced recently.
Konig is no stranger to Canadian National Team rosters, as she achieved a historic feat with the Canadian U19 National Team in July of 2017. The Wolfpack guard from Vancouver, British Columbia, helped her team win the bronze medal at the 2017 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup by defeating Japan 67-60 on July 30. The third-place finish was the highest ever for Canada at a FIBA U19 World Cup tournament. She also recently joined the Senior National Team for a five-game European exhibition tour in Belgium (June 14-16) and Great Britain (June 18-19).
Canada is currently ranked fifth in the FIBA World Ranking and will travel to Lima looking to defend its gold medal from the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. Canada is in Group A for the tournament and will face Brazil (August 6), Paraguay (Aug. 7), and Puerto Rico (Aug. 8) in the preliminary round.
The Pan Am Games will not have a direct impact on qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but will serve as an important step in preparing for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019 in September as Canada begins the qualification process for the Olympic Games.
During three seasons at NC State, Konig has appeared in 88 games (67 starts) and has averaged 31.2 minutes, 9.8 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game while hitting an impressive 214-of-583 (.367) three-point attempts. During her sophomore and junior seasons, she set and then reset new single-season program records of 91 and 93 made 3FG, respectively.
