“Pick a Ton” Fundraiser To Benefit Food Insecure Chapel Hill & Carrboro Children
Cedar Grove, NC – Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm calls on the community to help in feeding food insecure children in Chapel Hill and Carrboro during the farm’s 5th annual “Pick A Ton” fundraiser. The event will be held on Sunday, July 14th, at 105 Persimmon Hill Lane in Cedar Grove.
For every 25 lbs of blueberries picked that day, Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm will donate one pound to Table NC. The farm’s cider and winery, Botanist and Barrel, will also donate 5% of all tasting room sales to Table NC.
The Table NC’s Summer TABLE program feeds children 3- to 14-years-old. Summer is often the time when children are most susceptible to hunger when they aren’t receiving school meals, according to Table NC.
“We are so happy to be able to give out nutrient-dense foods like carrots and blueberries because these foods help kids’ minds and bodies to function properly, reduce sickness, increase energy, succeed in school, and so much more,” Table, Inc. Executive Director Ashton Chatham Tippins said.
“We expect this year’s event to be the biggest and best yet and are very excited to add live music to this year’s festivities,” says Kether Smith, co-owner of Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm. “It’s a wonderful day to come enjoy some time on the farm while helping to meet the needs of others,” says Deric McGuffey, co-owner of Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm.
The mission of the event is “to bring our community closer together with food,” says Kether Smith.
The event is from 10 am to 6 pm on July 14th and includes an old-fashioned pig-pickin’, seasonal sides made from Nourishing Acres produce, live music from Brook & Nick, yard games and fishing in the pond. The tasting room will be open from 12 pm to 6 pm.
