Former St. Augustine’s Standout Gathright To Play Pro Basketball In Sweden
Raleigh, NC – Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) graduate Tyre Gathright recently signed with the Norrkoping Dolphins of the Swedish Basketball League this month.
“It is a dream come true,” Gathright said. “I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was a kid. I always wanted to play professionally and now I get the chance to do that.”
A Wilmington, N.C., native, Gathright graduated from SAU in May 2019 after a stellar two-year basketball career as a dynamic shooting guard. He scored over 1,000 points and was a two-time All-CIAA performer and BOXTOROW All-American. On the court, Gathright earned a reputation as one of the top shooting guards in the conference. Gathright regularly torched opponents with high scoring totals including a 40-point performance against Livingstone on Feb. 20 and a 32-point effort against Winston-Salem State on Feb. 9. Also earning all-conference honors as a junior, Gathright shot an impressive 46.6 percent from the field this season, good for sixth in the conference. As a senior, he ranked third in the CIAA in points per game (20.9).
This past season, Gathright won the Lowe’s CIAA Sr. CLASS Award for men’s basketball. The award is given to the senior student-athlete who excels on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. He was also selected CIAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2019.
Also a standout in the classroom as a business administration major, Gathright graduated with a 3.24 grade-point average and earned spots on both the dean’s list and the scholar-athlete list at Saint Augustine’s University during his career.
While starring on the court and in the classroom, Gathright has displayed excellent character and a commitment to his community. He has prioritized service projects in the local community as a way of giving back and has assisted the Helping Hand Mission in Raleigh, N.C., with its annual Thanksgiving food drive. He also has provided mentorship to middle school kids in the Helping Hand program for Wake County Schools and coached middle school and elementary school kids in little league games at the J.D. Lewis Multipurpose Center in Raleigh.
Norrkoping Coach Mikko Riipinen expects the SAU standout to electrify the crowd with his explosive scoring.
Gathright leaves for Sweden in early August. The Dolphins’ first game is Sept. 27, 2019.
