[Gallery] Bernie Sanders Rally at UNC-Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC-Chapel Hill students lined up at two o’clock in the afternoon today to see Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders speak at the Bell Tower Amphitheater, adjacent to Kenan Stadium.

Phones went up, and air space dwindled, as rally attendees held their breath as they caught glimpse of a white van creeping down Stone Center Dr. But, the 78-year-old who’s running for the Democratic presidential nomination, didn’t step out the vehicle.

They waited.

Once the Democratic Socialist stepped onto the stage, his rally speech highlighted; eliminating the student loan debt, free tuition at public state universities, increasing the minimum wage, LGBTQ Rights, accessible health care and justice.

“If you study American history,” Sanders said, “what you learn is that real change has never taken place from the top on down. Always from the bottom on up. You know what I mean by that. Think about the labor movement. Think about the civil rights movement. Think about the women’s movement. Think about the gay movement. Think about the environmental movement and all of those movements were able to bring millions of people together in the struggle for justice. … That’s what this campaign is about. It’s a justice campaign.”
