Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. (Pi Chapter) Promotes Leadership Development, Community Service
Durham, NC – The Pi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated, a professional organization for registered nurses and student nurses, sponsored its second annual Leadership Retreat on June 6, 2019. Members of the local Pi Chapter are working diligently to promote the goals and objectives of the organization through leadership development, mentoring programs, and community service projects.
During the Retreat, Chapter members presented the following topics: “Leadership Engagement and Team Building” by Dr. Gloria McNeil and Norris Burton; “Introduction to GroupMe”, and “National and Regional Webpage Access” by Jouel Taylor; and “Documentation of Minutes and Reports” by Geneva Fearrington.
Other participants were: Riley B. Walters, Jr., President, Linda L. Hester, Leadership Retreat Coordinator, Carolyn Henderson, Mary W. Burriss, Freda G. Johnson, Willie Gilchrist-Stanfield, Mary Dempson, Roberta Amey Hill and Priscilla Ramseur. A total of twenty-six (26) members were in attendance which included six (6) of seven (7) new members who joined the chapter this year: Dr. Bobbie Brown, Lawrency Jones, Dr. Janece Moore, Priscilla Ramseur, Dr. Queen Utley-Smith and Dr. Nicole Ware.
The chapter also developed and implemented a mentoring program for members who are interested in leadership. Support is provided on an ongoing basis to ensure a smooth transition into leadership opportunities. Currently, Dr. Janece Moore is being mentored for the office of Secretary. Additionally, the chapter promotes future leaders in the field of nursing by awarding scholarships annually to deserving local nursing students.
Some of the chapter’s community service projects include a partnership with a local elementary school, mini health seminars, assistance with health fairs and conferences. Most recently, members participated with the Sickle Cell Conference sponsored by Duke University School of Nursing.
Chapter members continue to participate in regional and national conferences sponsored by Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated to enhance leadership skills. Four members of Pi Chapter served as delegates at the 65th Boulé (National Convention) of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated, that was held in Lombard, Illinois on July 7-13, 2019. They were: Riley B. Walters, Jr., Mary Dempson, Willie Gilchrist-Stanfield and Freda G. Johnson. Other chapter attendees were: Mary W. Burriss, Norris Burton, Geneva Fearrington, Linda L. Hester, Roberta Amey Hill, and Linda Rouse. Dr. Ernest Grant, another member of Pi Chapter who serves as President of the American Nurses Association, also attended. He was the keynote speaker at the Supreme Gala during the conference.
The current officers of Pi Chapter are: Riley B. Walters, Jr., President; Linda L. Hester, Secretary; Freda G. Johnson, Corresponding Secretary; Wyvonia Perry, Treasurer; Veronica Eubanks, Financial Secretary; Linda Rouse, Dean of Membership; Norris Burton, Beta Sponsor; Geneva Fearrington, Historian; Sylvia Richardson, Chaplain; Roberta Amey Hill, Philacter; Carolyn Henderson, Parliamentarian and Betty Reed, Nominating Committee Chair. Other members of Pi Chapter not previously mentioned are: Alberta L. Allen, the only surviving Charter Member, Elmontenal Allens, Eulah Cole, Jueldenn Ford, Vanessa Foust, Beulah Hollowell, Tina McEachin, Marion Miles, Dr. Stacey Porter and Edna A. Williams.
