[Trailer] HARRIET, Based on Iconic Freedom Fighter Harriet Tubman’s Life, Premiere Date Set

Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, HARRIET  (starring Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman) tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. HARRIET hits theaters November 1.

 

Cynthia Erivo

HARRIET stars Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters. Kasi Lemmons is the co-writer and director of the film.

Cynthia Erivo is a Tony®, Emmy® and Grammy® Award-winning actress who burst onto West End and Broadway stages in The Color Purple and has taken the big screen by storm. Upcoming, Erivo will star alongside Daisy Ridley and David Oyelowo in the anticipated sci-fi thriller, Chaos Walking, from director Doug Liman. She will also star in John Ridley’s Needle in a Timestack alongside Orlando Bloom, Freida Pinto, and Leslie Odom Jr. The story follows a husband whose marriage is destroyed by a time-travel rival and who will do whatever it takes to get his wife back. In addition, Erivo is set to executive produce and star in Warner Bros.’ musical take on the American folk tale of Rip Van Winkle.

Kasi Lemmons

Co-Writer/Director Kasi Lemmons is an award-winning director, writer, actress and professor who has been a staple in Hollywood for nearly three decades. Her acclaimed 1997 feature directorial debut, Eve’s Bayou, was recently inducted into the National Film Registry and is considered among the first to showcase the beauty of African American Southern culture. The film received the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, and the National Board of Review bestowed her with a special first-time director award. Eve’s Bayou marked Samuel L. Jackson’s debut as a film producer and helped launch the careers of actresses Megan Good and Jurnee Smollett. 

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monáe, as Marie Buchanon, is a Grammy®-nominated singer-songwriter, performer, producer, activist, and actress. In 2017, Monáe made her acting debut on the silver screen, starring in the Academy Award®-nominated film, Hidden Figures and the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture, Moonlight. Both films received critical acclaim and numerous accolades, cementing Monáe’s position in the film industry. She was recently seen in the Robert Zemeckis film, Welcome to Marwen.

Leslie Odom

Leslie Odom Jr., as William Still, is a Tony®- and Grammy® Award-winning performer who has taken the entertainment world by storm across a variety of media, spanning Broadway, television, film, and music. Odom Jr. recently completed a lead role in Sopranos, The Many Saints of Newark, David Chase’s movie prequel to the award-winning HBO series. He also wrapped production on the feature film directorial debut Music from recording artist Sia, and Needle in a Timestack, written and directed by John Ridley. He is also voicing a character in Josh Gad’s animated musical-comedy Central Park for Apple. He was last seen in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express for Twentieth Century Fox and Takashi Doscher’s Only, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Previous film work includes the 2012 historical drama, Red Tails, executive produced by George Lucas.
