Durham, NC – Notable author, professor, activist and influencer Dr. Michael Eric Dyson filled Durham’s historic Carolina Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, with an audience anticipating his radical and empowering words. During the weekend’s Art of Cool Festival, Dr. Dyson truly embodied the art of being cool as he brought to the forefront of his dialogue accurate black history in America and the state of being Black in current-day America. Not only did he address the racial aspect of residing in America, but he also spoke on the injustice relating to black women and the LGBTQ community. Dr. Dyson stated his “mission is to revive traditions of social conscious for indigenous people at their best…we have to deal with the realities of the trauma we [put] on each other. We have to challenge the trauma in our own communities.”

There were moments of complete silence as profound words flowed from his lips similar to that of a lyricist as he addressed today’s current events and social injustices. Between the silent moments, there were outbursts of laughter as he eloquently interjected comedy relating to the black community. The audience was captivated and hanging on to his every word. He commanded the room as only Michael Eric Dyson can. He engaged the audience as he incorporated songs of cultural influence within the black community from the smooth love songs of the ’70s to current day hip hop lyrics.

Dr. Dyson’s presence was one of strength. He challenged all who attended to remain intellectual. His disposition was enlightening and very intentional with a purpose to stir up those who would allow and radially carry the torch of resilience as live in our communities in the current day America. Dr. Dyson concluded his discussion with uplifting the black woman and celebrating her strength and the role she has played in black America. Dr. Dyson goes on to say, “This is why I celebrate black women. If you’re going to really revive black America, revive the black woman. Don’t be scared of strong black women.”

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is an unapologetic voice of today’s time who continues to intentionally speak truth for voiceless, underserved and vulnerable populations.
