Saint Augustine’s Nips Livingstone For Season’s First CIAA Win
Raleigh, NC – The Saint Augustine’s University Falcons are winless no more. The Falcons (1-5 overall, 1-3 CIAA) overcame an early first-half funk, by defeating the Livingstone College Blue Bears (4-2 overall, 2-2 CIAA) 20-12.
“I feel good for the kids,” Falcons coach Darryl Williams said, “I am happy for them to be able to see the victory right now. I am very proud of them. I feel really good right now.”
The Falcons trailed 10-0 after the first half because of offensive miscues. Both teams combined for 347 yards of offense.
A 1-yard run by Quarterback Jalen Jones with 11:11 in the 3rd quarter gave the Falcons their first points of the game and made the score 10-7.
The fourth quarter was when Saint Augustine’s finally decided to turn it up a notch. Jalen Jones threw touchdown passes to Aakiel Greer and Dontarian Evans.
“I knew from the start of the season that he was going to be a great leader for us. In other words,” Williams said about Jones. “We can rely on him to take this team to another level.”
The Blue Bears only points in the second half came from a blocked point-after-attempt that was returned by Raymon McGuire for two points.
“We basically made sure that we continued to fight play-by-play,” Williams said. “It wasn’t a situation where we had to rely on the big play to be successful. We just executed offensively and defensively play-by-play.”
The Falcons will travel to High Point, NC to face Winston-Salem State at 6 pm next Saturday, Oct. 19. The same day, the Livingstone Blue Bears will return to Raleigh to face the Shaw Bears on their homecoming at noon. The Livingstone-Shaw game will be at the George Williams Athletic Complex on the Saint Augustine University campus. Both matchups are CIAA Conference games.
