Early WSSU Run Proves Too Strong For Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men’s basketball team fell to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division leader Winston-Salem State University, 78-61 Monday evening inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Bears fall to 4-17 overall, 1-10 in the CIAA and 0-7 in Southern Division play. This was the first loss to the Rams since 2015. WSSU improves to 10-8, 8-2 CIAA and 4-1 in the Southern Division.

Shaw fell behind early and never led during the contest. The Bears faced deficits of 16-4 and 22-6 with 10:21 remaining in the first half. Shaw trimmed a 22-point Rams lead to 42-27 with a three from freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) before falling behind 47-29 at the break.

The second half mirrored the first with Shaw continuing to trail being unable to trim the WSSU lead to under 16 points. The Rams shot 45-percent from the floor to help pad their lead the rest of the way cruising to the double-digit victory.

Martin led the Bears with 23 points while junior guard Greyson Kelley followed with 22 points. Shaw finished 19-51 from the floor for 37-percent. Jaylen Alston paced the Rams with 21 points.

Shaw returns to action Saturday, Feb.1 as the Bears travel to Lincoln, P.A. to face Lincoln University. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
