Meet Cal Cunningham: Democratic Candidate For U.S. Senate
Paid for by Cal For NC (US Senate)
“We are going to have to vote like the future of America is decided right here in North Carolina.” That was Democrat Cal Cunningham’s call to action at the NAACP forum in Greensboro this month. Cal, a decorated Army veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, has traveled all across North Carolina since launching his campaign to unseat Thom Tillis in the United States Senate.
During his travels across the state, Cal has spoken to teachers, veterans, students, and seniors about the need to expand healthcare coverage, invest in public education, build an economy that works for everyone, and fight the corruption that grips Washington D.C.
Cal grew up in a family full of public school teachers, where his Aunt Sis taught him that “a good listener is a good learner.” That’s why Cal has attended countless forums, roundtables, and town halls from Asheville to Wilmington to hear the concerns of North Carolinians in every community. But Cal’s commitment to the people of our state didn’t begin with this campaign, he has lived a life in service of the people of North Carolina.
At 27, Cal became one of North Carolina’s youngest State Senators where he fought for smaller class sizes, higher teacher pay, and investments in early childhood education and our university and community college system. He also helped pass landmark clean air legislation to protect North Carolina’s environment. After 9/11, Cal signed up to serve his country in the Army Reserve where he went on to serve tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Fort Bragg, earning the Bronze Star and prestigious Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award. Today, Cal continues to train Special Forces at Fort Bragg.
Cal built his campaign on the promise to put the people of North Carolina first, and he has been living that promise on the campaign trail ever since by traveling across the state and listening to the people he hopes to serve. He believes that with courageous leadership in Washington, we can build on the Affordable Care Act and ensure coverage for all North Carolinians, that we can invest in public education and create new pathways to opportunity for all, and build an economy that lifts every community across our state.
Cal is running for U.S. Senate in the Democratic Primary on March 3rd, with the intent to unseat Republican Senator Thom Tillis in November.
