Cong. Ayanna Pressley, Natalie Murdock Host ‘Tea Talk About Warren’s Black Agenda’
DURHAM, NC – Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass) and Durham County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor Natalie Murdock, who is a candidate for NC Senate District 20, hosted a ‘Tea Talk’ to discuss issues that face the citizens of Durham and neighboring counties. The event was held Friday, February 21, at Zweli’s in Durham and was sponsored by Team Warren and Natalie Murdock.
Congresswoman Pressley, one of three Warren For President Co-Chairs, stated that Sen. Warren had earned her vote and her friendship. She highlighted Warren’s “Working Agenda for Black America” as one of the main components of Warren’s platform. Warren plans to reshape our economy, restore our government and save our democracy by tackling generations of racial injustice and systemic discrimination head-on.
Pressley focused on issues important to Durham’s Black and Brown community that are also important to Elizabeth Warren that includes student debt cancellation plan will help close the wealth gap between Black and white families; end the practice of mass incarceration; help families living in formerly redlined areas buy a home and start building wealth; creating a new program with $7 billion in funding to provide grants to entrepreneurs of color; better fund HBCUs; environmental justice plan for Black and Brown communities; respects the rights of Native Americans to protect their lands; and start work on day one in office to close the pay gap between women of color and everyone else. Natalie Murdock’s platform also champions issues important to black and brown women and families. Her policy proposals include restoring the state abortion fund, funding doula programs for black women and other people at a higher risk of dying in childbirth, and fully funding the childcare assistance voucher program. Murdock’s platform also focuses on affordable housing, environmental justice, alternatives to incarceration, raising the minimum wage, and investing in equitable education for all communities.
“Young black women are more likely than any other Durham residents to live in poverty,” Murdock said. “Black and brown women can’t wait for permission to lead. We have to act now; our lives depend on it.”
Murdock currently works to improve life in Durham County as an elected Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor with more than a decade of experience in government affairs, transportation, agriculture, environmental issues, project management, economic development, and communications through various positions held in state, regional and local levels of government.
Her previous service as Deputy Director of Communications and Community Outreach and Partnership Manager for Attorney General Josh Stein, Traveling Press Secretary for the Deborah Ross for Senate Campaign, and Director of Communications and Public Involvement for GoTriangle regional transit agency has provided Murdock with the experience needed to serve North Carolina on day one.
