Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Durham Alumnae) Presents Miss Jabberwock 2020
Durham, NC – On Saturday, February 08, 2020, seven beautiful debutantes graced the stage of B. N. Duke Auditorium in anticipation of the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Jabberwock Scholarship Gala. The Jabberwock 2020 Vision theme of this annual event was “I See; Therefore, I Am”. The seven debutantes opened the gala with a moving performance to “Queen” by Janelle Monet. The event continued with many more memorable moments. The moment many awaited came with the crowning of Miss Jabberwock 2020: Jalia Donnell. The Jabberwock Court consisted of 1st Runner-up: Aliyah Marable, 2nd Runner-up: LeDavia Sellars.

Jalia Donnell, a Northern High School senior, is the daughter of Mr. Jasper Donnell, III & Mrs. Cenalia Donnell. Jamal Keith escorted her.
Alanaa Leonard, a City of Holly Springs High School senior, is the daughter of Mr. Kenneth Leonard, Jr. & Mrs. Devin Cofield. Jalon Smith escorted her.
Aliyah Marable, a Hillside High School senior, is the daughter of Mr. Carlos F. & Mrs. Tawana Thorpe Marable. Brian Harrison escorted her.
Taylor McDaniel, a South Granville High School senior, is the daughter of Mrs. Novella Young. Christopher Humes escorted her.
Evelyn Rich, a Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College junior, is the daughter of Mr. Whitney Rich & Mrs. Denise Rich. Khayree Dixon escorted her.
Saniya Rochelle, a Southern School of Energy and Sustainability senior, is the daughter of Mr. Demario Rochelle & Mrs. Jamie Robbins. Troy Frazier escorted her.
LeDavia Sellars, a Southern School of Energy and Sustainability senior, is the daughter of Mr. David Sellars & Mrs. Lenell Sellars. Ryan Byrd escorted her.
The Jabberwock was initially presented in 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts. Jabberwock, a word copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., derives from Lewis Carroll’s tale Alice in Wonderland nonsense poem “Jabberwocky,” in which it was customary for creatures from throughout the kingdom to gather annually to present a gala event.
The Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has held this annual scholarship program since 1962, awarding scholarships to Durham County residents. The Jabberwock Gala is a formal event resulting from the culmination of social activities, community service, educational workshops, and scholarship fundraising opportunities. The scholarships awarded to the 2020 Jabberwock debutantes were in excess of $45,000.00.
