Realtor Derek Vereen: One Of Few Original ‘Durhamites’ Servicing His Community
Durham, NC – In 2015 Derek Vereen’s New Year’s resolution was to become a Real Estate Agent. In the year prior, Derek had seen the median price for homes sold in Durham’s Southside neighborhood jump from $18 per square foot in January 2014 to $133 per square foot by September 2014.
An alumnus of Durham’s Hillside High School, Derek knew the success his hometown had in attracting new businesses and residents. The average new resident moving to Durham made on average $13,000 more a year than the current residents, increasing the competition for a limited supply of housing for those wealthier new Durhamites. The same shortages also existed further out in stable middle-class neighborhoods. He also recognized the income and housing limits within his own community.
Completing a real estate licensing school later that year, Derek successfully passed the exam. Under an apprenticeship with local real estate icon Amy Pomerantz, he sold his first home as a Licensed Realtor. Now, Derek has helped over 50 families buy and sell homes and/or land in and around the 919 area as a proud agent of Coldwell Banker HPW.
Derek excelled in the classroom as a graduate of the International Baccalaureate program at Hillside and as a multi-sport athlete, earning a 4-A State Championship and All-State honors his senior year in 2011. He earned a full scholarship to Elon University.
During his time at Elon, Derek played football and focused on his studies in entrepreneurship and innovation at the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. After graduating early with a degree in Business Management Derek sought out valuable real estate management skills during opportunities with the Durham Housing Authority and leasing consulting jobs in High Point, Greensboro and Durham.
Still committed to his community, Derek’s career as a Licensed Realtor has allowed him to coach football and baseball at Rogers Herr Middle School since 2017 and substitute teach in Durham Public Schools since 2018.
Marrying his college sweetheart Bernadette Cooper in 2019, they have 2 Rottweilers named Rello and Roxie.
With a passion for going above and beyond to deliver a seamless real estate transaction to his clients and counterparts, Derek Vereen looks forward to opportunities to work with home buyers, sellers, and investors in the Triangle.
