R&B Singer FAWAZ: Featured Artist Of The Week
Fawaz, who sings, makes beats, records, mixes and masters his own music, has been selected as the Spectacular Magazine Featured Artist of the Week. Originally from Nigeria, Fawaz Saheed-Baba has been living in the United States for over 7 years now, currently residing in Philadelphia. He came to the U.S. to pursue an education and his music career.
Fawaz wrote his latest release “Same Girl” after an unfortunate event where a girl he had a strong connection with ended up with another guy. She was not sure if she made the right decision but she had to choose.
“I also was not sure if she would still be the same, so I decided to record a song about it. When everything goes wrong, I end up running to music because it is my haven. Good music gives me butterflies and music is therapeutic for me. I have had a dark past and the only thing that keeps me positive and in the light is music.”
Listen to “Same Girl” – my review is below. Tell me in the comments section what you think about Fawaz’s music. Do you agree with me or not?
REVIEW: “Same Girl” by Fawaz
I really like this song. I think it has the potential to be a hit amongst young people in the 16-19 age range. It has the R&B and trap/soul elements that Generation Z’ers have been pushing in the media. It’s not too short and the message of the song is very clear. I think it will be well received by the youth more than anything. Looking forward to hearing more from him.
Fawaz tells us more about himself and his music:
Yimisa Brodie (YB): What is your real and professional name?
Fawaz: My name is Fawaz, some people prefer to call me Waz. I use my actual name as my artist name because people usually don’t believe my first name is an actual name.
YB: What is your genre/profession?
Fawaz: My genres are R&B and alternative R&B but I dabble into pop, reggae, Afropop, and many other genres from time to time.
YB: When did you start?
Fawaz: I started making music officially in 2013 but I was always musically inclined from being in the choir when I was 9 years old to back in high school when I was in a group and we would just write songs and make music that we ended up never recording.
YB: In what ways has your music changed since you first got started?
Fawaz: My music has always been evolving because I was always trying to find “my sound”, but now I know what my sound is, and I know one day the world will catch on. My music has changed in a lot of ways, but the main thing that has changed is it is deeper and more personal.
YB: What is your motivation for your art?
Fawaz: My main motivation is myself and my family. Growing up, I have experienced everything from being broke and trying to survive, to when my parents got their opportunity and started getting money. I feel like my mother suffered a lot for me to get where I am. Every day I think about it, music is the only way I give her what she deserves. Also, I want to do what I love for money and not settle for anything else.
YB: Who are your musical or artistic influences?
Fawaz: My influences range from old artists to newer artists. Older influences like Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Ben E. King, Westlife, Celine Dion, and a Nigerian singing group called Style Plus. Newer Influences like The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, and Tory Lanez.
YB: Are there any artists with whom you would like to collaborate? Why?
Fawaz: Yes. I would love to sit in a studio with The Weeknd and just see how he writes his music and melodies. I am a student first, so I want to pick his brain and just learn from him.
YB: Do you have any upcoming projects, shows, or appearances? What are your next steps?
Fawaz: I have a few singles that I will be dropping consecutively and then I will be dropping a project. So be on the lookout for that. My next steps are to just hit the goals I set for myself this year. One of them is getting on an official Spotify playlist and the rest will follow. Also growing a strong and consistent fanbase.
