New Bern, NC – Black Fourth is a movement that will commence as a peaceful protest on a date that is known in American history as Independence Day. To quote the title of the speech by Frederick Douglass “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?,” the nation is at a pivotal time where many Black people are still reeling from the impact of slavery including systemic oppression and wealth disparity, so celebrating ‘America’s freedom’ is not only ironic but painful for some. After observing years of inequalities in the Black community and the recent tragic deaths of Amaud Arbury and George Floyd; Dante Sellers knew he had to do something.

“I’m always thinking of ways to empower my community and after partnering with some friends, organizing a march seemed like a good way to unite at this time,” Sellers said. “[I] Have to highlight people like Demarquis Howell, founder of Kool Kidz Nation, Ashley Morris, MaQuita Eaton, DaQuan Mosley, and countless others who saw my vision and immediately partnered to bring this march to life.”

black fourthThe Black Fourth March For Change is taking place in New Bern, North Carolina on July 4, 2020, at 9:30 am. The March will begin at Fort Totten Park (1402 Trent Blvd.) and proceed to Union Point Park (210 E. Front) where a rally will take place.

The mile and half march will serve as a protest against racial and economic injustices experienced daily by Black and Brown people. The hope is that the community uniting and using its voice will be the catalyst needed in achieving real justice and equality for all.

Sellers, 30, a native of New Bern, currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. He decided New Bern would be a great birthplace of the first Black Fourth march.

He says the march is just the first of many calls to action from the Black Fourth. Black Fourth desires to advance the Black community through programs and engagements on the pillars of justice reform, economic empowerment, equitable healthcare, and bridging the education gap.

“I want The Black Fourth March For Change to be an annual event for all generations in hopes that the world will understand that ‘Red, White, & Blue’ will never symbolize freedom without the true representation of Black.”
