Getting Situated: 5 Tips for Setting Up a Craft Room
If you’ve finally decided to let your crafting hobby take over the spare room in the house, look here. We’ve laid out some tips for setting up a craft room!
Lots of people are using the longer summer days to accomplish projects around the home. They head to the garden to do some landscaping, or they stick inside to get some much-needed painting done. One of our favorite projects has to do with fixing up the spare room. There are tons of options you can go with, but we love the idea of creating a crafting space. This can look however you want it—something focused solely around sewing and fashion projects, or something that’s as open to learning as you are. Either way, here are our tips for setting up a craft room. Check them out!
Stock Up on Essential Craft Tools
A craft room is only as beneficial as the tools within it. If you’re using a bunch of old tools or constantly struggling to cut through fabric with dull scissors, then an upgrade is in order. Start with the basic tools every crafter needs —sharp scissors, craft knives, hot glue guns—and then build up your stock from there. When you invest in high-quality tools, you won’t have to restock so often.
Invest in a Sturdy, Large Table
A craft table is one of the most crucial pieces of furniture for a craft room. Choose a worktable with plenty of room on the surface so that you can spread out your materials without having to worry about space. You’ll want to have enough room to work efficiently and comfortably and rarely feel cramped. It will make your crafting process much easier!
Offer Various Storage Options
Storage is one of the most important aspects of crafting space. If you don’t have varied storage options, then the organization will be a disaster. Find shelving units (both open and closed), which will help you store fabrics and big items. Get canisters to fill with small craft supplies—ribbon, cotton balls, yarn, paintbrushes. Get creative with your storage options.
Once you’ve set up your room, set an organization schedule for yourself. Once a week, make time to go through and organize the room and all the supplies. Otherwise, you run the risk of a messy room and lost supplies.
Divide the Room into Craft Zones
One of the most important tips for setting up a craft room is to come up with a system for your space. Create a space for your computer and any other digital needs. Define other spaces for other crafting projects—an area for painting, an area for quilting. Either way, dividing the space will help you keep things organized.
Pay Attention to Lighting Choices
Our last tip is one you don’t want to forget. The lighting in your space will have a huge impact on how long you can craft and on the success of a project. If you’re straining to see, stitches could go awry. If you only have bright light and no natural light, headaches will come in no time. Pay attention to how you go about lighting.
