“Woke” takes an absurdly irreverent look at identity and culture as it follows Keef (Morris), a Black cartoonist finally on the verge of mainstream success when an unexpected incident changes everything. With a fresh outlook on the world around him, Keef must now navigate the new voices and ideas that confront and challenge him, all without setting aflame everything he’s already built.

Fans of Chicago native Lamorne Morris remember him as the character Winston Bishop paired with actress Nasim Pedrad in “New Girl” for FOX, and Netflix’s movie, “Desperados”. He was also cast in National Geographic’s Valley of the Boom and Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles. Cartoon Network also featured him as a host on BrainRush.

In real life, Keith Knight is an award-winning comic strip creator, and his autobiographical strips include The K Chronicles, The Knight Life, and (th)ink. His work is published in national publications and centers on “social, racial and class issues while providing a comedic take on pop culture and the minutiae of urban living”, according to Deadline.

T. Murph and Blake Anderson also star in the series. Developed by Knight and Marshall Todd, Woke is a co-production between ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

All episodes will debut on September 9. Watch the trailer below:
