Durham, NC – Black August in the Park is being held this year at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh as a safer ‘Pull Up’ event to celebrate Blackness and commemorate Black August.  The Black August legacy of celebrations signifies our history of resistance and creating spaces for Black people to come together in community and to recharge the revolution.

Black August Pull Up will be held Saturday, August 29th from 6 pm – 11 pm.  Due to COVID-19, coordinators have put in place a tailgate-style festival for Black people to enjoy Black music and community from the safety of your car or virtually from home.

This annual event is committed to relationships that inspire healing through Black joy with additional emphasis on providing a platform for social justice organizations. This year marks the National Black movement in a time of disarray, grief, and rebellion.  At the current state of our nation, police brutality and Black Lives Matter are at an all-time high. White supremacists and protestors are flooding the streets in almost every state in the U.S. From prison walls to small communities and institutions, Black August 2020 is very meaningful.

Black August began in the 1970s due to the assassination of the imprisoned Black Panther and author George Jackson during a prison rebellion in California.  This month, we celebrate all the political prisoners who have helped us understand that prison is political and that our collective freedom depends on abolishing the state’s capacity, through incarceration, policing, and surveillance. Centuries of enslavement exist in the present, like generations of ancestors before.   This is the legacy of Black August.
