Community Events That Help Those in Need
Why wait for the winter holidays to help your community when you could start now? Check out these solid community events that help those in need.
It’s never a bad time to support your community. A lot of people hold out for the holidays, but community support is essential, no matter the season. That said, one of the reasons people may not advocate in their communities as much outside of the holidays is because they’re unsure of how to help. They’re used to gathering the can donations for Thanksgiving and dropping some money in a pot in front of grocery stores through December.
But here’s the thing—there are plenty of community events that help those in need that are possible year-round. We’ve listed out a few of our favorites that you could do as a family, a neighborhood, a business, or a club. Take a look!
Donation Drives
You may notice that particular businesses, neighborhoods, and organizations use donation drives within their group to help those in need. But think about how, when expanded, you could raise even more. If your business can partner with others nearby for a clothing donation, you could donate that much more. However, going big-picture like that means a lot more planning, so make sure to check out some tips for planning donation drives.
Either way, don’t limit who you reach out to for these. The more people of the community you include, the more people you’ll help.
Charity Races
Whether it’s a breast cancer run or a 5k to raise money for shelters in the community, charity runs have been a popular way to raise awareness for years. It’s an excellent way to involve the community in events that help those in need. If you can, set up or participate in some charity races in your area. If you aren’t personally able to attend, spread awareness for them. These races help a variety of demographics, but if you feel like there’s an area that’s particularly in need, try to organize a race yourself!
Building Homes
Habitat for Humanity has been in the business of building homes for years, and they’re still going. If you haven’t participated before, do so as soon as possible. It’s a rewarding experience for you, it helps those in need, and it brings a calm to your mind that you may not have felt in a while. If you don’t have a Habitat for Humanity chapter in your community, see what else you can do to build homes for the underprivileged in the community.
It’s not a simple task, so ensure that you do a lot of research and talk to the right people before you start putting hammer to wood.
Volunteer at Voting Polls
It’s an election year, which means it’s time to volunteer at voting polls. Though voting looks quite different this year because of the pandemic, if you’re healthy and able, see about volunteering at local polling stations. It makes a huge impact, even if it may not seem like it. This aid helps those in need in a way that you may not realize, but access to voting is essential and something you can help with.
