7 Ways To Fight Dry Skin In The Fall

The changing seasons mean your happy and healthy skin could be changing, too. Follow these tips for keeping your skin healthy and moisturized this fall.

As the weather transitions from summer to fall, our skin can start to feel the wrath of the changing environment. Dry skin is especially common as the weather transitions from warm and sticky to dry and cold. Follow these seven ways to fight dry skin to keep your skin moisturized and healthy throughout the fall season.

Exfoliate and Moisturize

fallDon’t skimp on exfoliating and moisturizing during the fall months. Exfoliation is necessary to remove dead skin particles. After you’ve exfoliated with a gentle scrub in the shower or bath, apply moisturizer to your skin generously. Because you exfoliated first, your skin’s outer barrier allows the moisturizer to absorb into your skin better for more effective moisturizing.

Change Your Soap

Soaps with harsh chemicals can quickly dry out your skin. For the new season, switch to gentle moisturizing soaps. Cleansing creams, gentle skin cleansers, and bath or shower gels with added moisturizers that have added oils and fats are the best soap options for dry skin.

Use Warm Water (Not for Too Long, Though)

Taking too long or too hot of showers can strip your skin of necessary oils. When bathing, aim for a 10-minute shower with warm but not hot water.

Get a Humidifier

Dry indoor air can hurt your skin just as much as the outside temperature. A portable humidifier will bring moisture back to your home to limit the risk of worsening dry skin.

Wear Cotton Clothes

It’s natural to want to break out the heavy wool sweaters for the fall season, but these can take a toll on your skin. Natural fibers like cotton allow your skin to breathe better instead of keeping it from moisture and fresh air.

Drink More Water

One of the best ways to fight dry skin in the fall is to drink more water. Try cutting back on a caffeinated beverage or two and drink an extra glass of water to keep your skin well-hydrated.

Add Some Healthy Fats To Your Diet

Omega-3 fatty acids keep skin cells healthy and help your skin retain moisture. Add tasty (and healthy) foods like salmon, walnuts, and avocados to your weekly diet.
