Garisha Davis: Ebonettes 2020 “Dare to Make a Difference” Honoree, Recipient Of Two Awards

DURHAM, NC – Garisha Davis shows her commitment to service in the community through volunteerism.  She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and her church, Cedar Grove Church (CGC).  Through Delta and CGC, Garisha has been following her passion for volunteerism, particularly, in service to underprivileged youth.  

Garisha’s service led the Ebonettes Service Club to honor her with two 2020 “Dare to Make a Difference” Awards in the categories of Service to Youth and Service to Community.

Judge Walker would have been honored at The Ebonettes Service Club’s 48th Founders Day that was scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2020.  The Covid 19 pandemic canceled the celebration. Since 2002, the Founders Day program annually has showcased  hard-working Durham citizens in the “Dare to Make A Difference Recognition Program.”

The other outstanding 2020 “Dare to Make a Difference” Honorees are Kasib Abdullah, Juliet Black, Joseph K. Davis, Jr., Rev. Dr. William M. McCoy, Jr., Angela Pittman, Gail S. Taylor, Judge Doretta Walker, and Queen Lawrence.

About Garisha Davis

Garisha Davis, a native of Queens, New York, is married to Maurice Davis of Durham and they have three daughters, Cynia Black, Kolby Black, and Mariah Davis.

Garisha earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from North Carolina Central University and a Master of Science nursing leadership and management degree from Western Governors University. She is certified by The American Organization of Nurse Executives as a nurse manager leader and as a clinical nurse III and IV at Duke University Medical Center.

In 2000, Garisha began her career as a registered nurse at Duke University Medical Center caring for gynecology oncology patients. With a passion for community health and wellness, she transitioned to home health nursing where her expertise in nursing care reached beyond the walls of the hospital into the homes of patients. At Duke Home Care and Hospice, she served as a case manager and interim supervisor.  Always looking for new challenges, Garisha found her niche in nursing leadership and joined the Duke Specialty Infusion team as the nurse manager of operations in 2011. 

Garisha is a faithful member of Durham’s Cedar Grove Church (CGC), North Carolina. Her faithfulness and passion for community health and wellness led her to create the health and wellness committee at Cedar Grove in 2006 and she continues to lead that committee. Her involvement in the church is not limited to health and wellness only. She has served as a parent liaison of the Cedar Grove Youth choir as well as in various other roles.

Garisha shows her commitment to service in the community through volunteerism.  She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated.  Through Delta and CGC, Garisha has been following her passion for volunteerism, particularly, in service to underprivileged youth. She currently serves as chair of Delta Academy for the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. Delta Academy, a national initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a concerted effort to save young females from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. The academy provides educational enrichment and personalized attention to African American girls between the ages of 11 and 14.

The primary goal of the academy is to prepare young women for full participation in the 21st-century world by providing them with supervised and structured experiences that broaden their world view, improve their academic performance, increase their technological skills, and give them opportunities for leadership and service.  Garisha is not only the chair of Delta Academy but also has served as a member and co-chair for the past five years. In 2006-2007, she served as co-chair of the health committee for the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People. 

Garisha is the recipient of multiple awards and certificates for her service.  Among them are:

  • Nomination for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Caregiver award at Duke University Hospital;
  • Delta Sigma Theta, Durham Alumnae Chapter Committee of the Year award in 2019;
  • Delta Sigma Theta, Durham Alumnae Chapter Certificate of Excellence for service to the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy award in 2016;
  • Cedar Grove Leadership Recognition certificate in 2015; and
  • Duke Home Care and Hospice, Quality Achievement award in 2008.

In addition to volunteerism, Garisha’s pastime activities include dancing, music, and traveling with her family. A native of Queens, New York, Garisha is married to Maurice Davis of Durham and they have three daughters, Cynia Black, Kolby Black, and Mariah Davis.
