Jermaine & Sharon Marsh, Owners Of Marsh’s Rentals: Company Built On Drive, Passion, Faith

Durham, NC – Husband and wife duo, Jermaine and Sharon Marsh stepped into the cutthroat industry of event rentals in 2016. Their company was built on drive, passion, and faith. Marsh’s Rentals help customers with rental, delivery, set-up, and pick up of items needed for their events.
Before the company started, the Marsh’s owned a lot of tables and chairs. They begin to notice that people wanted to borrow them. “I always wanted to own a business,” Jermaine said. Sharon brought up the idea to start a rental company that would allow people to rent items for their events.
After beginning Marsh’s Rentals, the couple had to work to build their company’s name and clientele. “We had to fight and claw our way through to get clientele. When entering an industry for the first time, it’s hard to build clientele and get contracts from huge clients if you don’t have connections or know anyone in the business already. To gain clientele, you have to present yourself and represent your company to the best of your ability,” Jermaine explained.


They relied on word of mouth and social media advertisement to get started. After working hard to gain clientele they were able to work on major events including the Black Chamber of Commerce Gala and Women’s Empowerment in 2017. Sharon said, “The gala was a big eye-opener because it showed us that this was our passion. We loved setting up for it, and our passion made us able to complete the event and make it great.”
In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic affected the Marshs company tremendously. “COVID affected 90% of our business,” said Sharon. Despite the challenges of COVID, the Marshs’ were able to improvise and keep their business running with the addition of U-Haul rentals.
Although COVID has tested the Marshs’ company, they have never thought about giving up on their business. “We are a faith-driven couple. So, we have to have faith that at some point the industry will pick back up. We are in way too deep from a company standpoint to throw in the towel.”
The Marsh’s worked to make sure that their company different from other established companies in the industry. Unlike other companies, Marsh’s Rentals not only deliver the items needed for your event, but they also set up for the event. Customer satisfaction is their number one priority. After scheduling an appointment, they take the time to understand what the client needs for their event and make sure that their vision becomes a reality. Their ultimate goal is to make sure that every client’s event is what they want it to be.
Jermaine and Sharon Marsh are proud of their business. If they were to advise anyone wanting to own a rental business, they believe that faith, drive, and willingness to work unlimited hours are most important.
In the future, the Marsh’s wants to continue their work and grow their company. They want to one day have a full staff, their own facility and, continue to deliver their service to the community at a high level.
