“CLEO SPEAKS” Features Influential Women of Color: Compton Mayor Aja Brown This Sun.
CLEO TV highlights the third season of CLEO SPEAKS: POLITICS, PROSE & POWER airing Sunday, February 28 at 9 PM/8C. The groundbreaking and candid series showcases some of the most powerful and influential women of color in the country to tell their story and speak their truth in an intimate setting.
In this episode, CLEO SPEAKS features Aja Brown, Mayor of Compton, California. She was raised by a single mother and moved around a lot as a child due to financial strain, but experienced her mother’s resiliency and strength during difficult situations. An inquisitive child, Mayor Brown grew up questioning why certain communities and certain families had more than others. Her time at USC, made her fall in love with urban planning and economic development as a way to combat poverty within marginalized communities. With no political campaign experience, Mayor Brown stepped out on faith and embarked on a journey to change systems from the “top down and with a vision”. In this episode, Mayor Brown reveals how an invitation to a Bible Study in Compton led her to be the youngest elected Mayor in the City of Compton, unify rival gangs, and change the narrative for her community.
