Six HBCU graduates are growing their liquor business in an industry mired with government regulations, especially in their home state. Still Moon Whiskey was founded in 2014 by six co-owners, all North Carolina natives, who met as undergraduates at NC A&T State University in Greensboro. Gale Frasier Cox (Marketing), Ponce Tidwell Jr. (Counsel), Gary Duncan (Mixologist), Shon Yancey (President), Ralph Frasier (Vice President & Counsel), and Kelvin Bratcher (Counsel) developed Still Moon Whiskey from Gary Duncan’s grandfather’s unique moonshine recipe. Still Moon Whiskey, also known as the ‘Sophisticated Sipping Shine’, is a modern-day moonshine whiskey that is manufactured and shipped from North Carolina, Texas, and Indiana. Now it’s also sold in those states and more across the country. But it wasn’t that easy to get it in NC government-controlled liquor stores.
The company found their drink passing government regulations with ease and placing their product on the shelves of stores in Texas and Indiana, as the product well-exceeds government regulations for public consumption. They have expanded into states as far as Illinois and Louisiana. All while working through the government regulations and red tape in North Carolina.
But Still Moon Whiskey prevailed. As of February 2021, Still Moon Whiskey Apple Pie and White Peach flavors are now sold in North Carolina ABC Stores. Frasier says “bringing the product to North Carolina felt like the drink was coming home.”
If you are looking to buy a bottle at the stores that carry it on the shelves in North Carolina, it would be a good idea to be on the store’s email chain because it sells out as soon as it reaches the shelves.
“We would like to have our drinks on the shelves of stores around the world,” said Frasier.

“Gary Duncan’s grandfather was the sole owner of this unique recipe for moonshine. We were always in the moonshine business but not necessarily the right way. We had success from a social standpoint where others craved the product and gave great feedback. So, my Phi Beta Sigma fraternity brothers and our families took the recipe and reinvented it. We questioned ourselves asking “If we sold moonshine today what would it look like”? We decided to come up with something that will be anywhere in the country and fit today’s market and demographic. It was important that we created a bottle that looked premium. Instead of mason jar, very distinguished. All in all, we wanted to create a VISUAL for how it will taste and feel.”
Bratcher goes on to say that the whiskey is 100% organic and 100% corn. A lot of other brands are not 100% corn, they usually have other things mixed in with it.
Still Moon Whiskey manufactures and ships from North Carolina, Texas, and Indiana. This company is doing a stellar job at closely connecting with customers in the local area.
