FatBoys Kitchen Owner Davin Kearney Unconditionally Supports His Community
Raleigh, NC – The COVID-19 pandemic has hit a lot of businesses hard and the food truck business has arguably suffered the most. With businesses and people now staying at home, food trucks have found it difficult to maintain a foothold in their community. Therefore, it is always great to hear about a business like FatBoys Kitchen. Through their Food Truck Rodeos, the company and its owner, Davin Kearney, have been able to draw out crowds, not just for themselves, but for other food trucks as well.
Kearney fell in love with cooking at an early age. “I started cooking as a kid, watching my mom and grandma cooking Sunday dinners.” He was inspired by the love they poured into the creation of every meal and soon he started to cook on the grill. After numerous compliments on his cooking, Kearney decided to take his cooking outside of his family.
In 2015, he bought a pig cooker and began setting up a tent outside of Call Centers, selling lunches to the staff. A year later, he got his first food truck and FatBoys became a huge success. The food truck became extremely popular around the Triangle area and this allowed Kearney to expand his business by acquiring a second food truck and hiring 8 new staff members.
Today, FatBoys Kitchen is still going strong. They continue to set up outside of businesses that are open and provide lunch and dinner to the staff. After the pandemic hit, Kearney noticed that a lot of hospitals were forced to close their kitchens and so he set up the food trucks outside hospitals to provide meals for the staff. “They closed the hospital kitchen so now they can come to the food truck and get a hot meal. It helps us and helps the hospital staff.” This sort of generous relationship has helped keep FatBoys alive and thriving during the pandemic and has even become a staple of the business itself.
In the summer of 2020, they launched their first Food Truck Rodeo. “The Food Truck Rodeo did well. We followed all safety precautions, so people had to wear masks and sanitize, and we kept the headcount in the area at a safe number. It did surprisingly well.” This Rodeo helped not only FatBoys Kitchen but other food trucks that were hit by the pandemic.
Moreover, Kearney partnered with a Food Bank to give back to the community as well. “We like to partner with an organization where we can give back. The last time [Food Truck Rodeo 2020] was at the Food Bank at Capital Boulevard in Raleigh. It was nice because we fed a lot of families by doing the rodeo and the food truckers did really well, so it kind of worked out for everybody.”
As businesses slowly start opening once more, Kearney is excited to get back to doing what he loves. There are already plans for a third truck that will be focused on desserts, selling everything from ice cream to hot and cold combined dishes. They are also eager to open up a brick-and-mortar location in the future for people to come out and visit.
With all this, Kearney has not forgotten about the other food truckers though. He has scheduled his next Food Truck Rodeo for September and is planning a second one to feature earlier in the year as well. “The last one we did was during COVID and we had 1,500 to 2,000 people coming out. It did very well. People from near and far came out.” This immense support from the community is also responsible for fueling Kearney’s drive and dedication.
“Since COVID started, a lot of the regulars would come out and would leave generous tips to support the staff. Everyone has come out and shown a lot of love and they supported us. The community has given back to us.” Kearney remains grateful to the community for supporting him and this feeling is often reciprocated into him giving back to the community.
Whether it is providing hot meals to hospital workers or helping other food truckers or partnering with food banks, his love for food has transformed into a business that is dedicated to giving back to the community that has helped him during the tough times of the pandemic. FatBoys has slowly been able to get back to their normal operation due to businesses opening back up. They are once again planning to set up around universities such N.C. State, Wake Tech, and UNC-Chapel Hill. With more events coming up and plans for expansion of the business, Kearney and FatBoys are eager to serve the community that has helped see them through this pandemic.
