Cassandra Burney Granted Inaugural Martin Marietta Faculty Fellowship At Shaw U.

Raleigh, NC – Shaw University has a new faculty fellowship as a result of a partnership with Raleigh-based company Martin Marietta, a leading supplier of building materials and a member of the S&P 500 Index. The inaugural Martin Marietta Faculty Fellowship has been granted to Cassandra Burney, assistant professor in Shaw’s School of Business and Professional Studies.

Burney earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting and management from Shaw University and a Master of Accountancy degree from Poole College School of Management at North Carolina State University. She has experience in both internal and external audits, as well as management leadership. At Shaw University, Burney teaches financial, managerial, tax, and audit courses in the undergraduate accounting program. She enjoys the mentorship aspect of her role at Shaw University and serves as the faculty advisor for the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).

Actively involved in her community, Burney serves in several organizations such as the Helping Other People Excel (H.O.P.E) Organization, Institute of Internal Auditors, National Association of Black Accountants, the VITA/TCE Program, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She enjoys spending quality time with her family, traveling, decorating, and playing golf.

Burney is currently pursuing her doctorate at UNC-Charlotte. Her goal in obtaining a Doctorate in Business Administration is to further her career by becoming a researcher and preparing herself for a future in a senior administration position in the university system. Her research emphasis is on workplace diversity and its impact on minorities within the accounting profession, as well as, education research. The education research will be related to undergraduate-level accounting courses regarding course design and content delivery techniques that improve student performance, retention, and career readiness. The collaboration with Martin Marietta continues Shaw’s partnerships with corporations such as Apple, Red Hat, and IBM, promoting a diversified workforce.
