Tar Heel Women Receive NCAA At-Large Bid
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With an at-large bid to the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the North Carolina women’s basketball team is off to Texas.
The Tar Heels (13-10) are seeded 10th in the Hemisfair Region and will face No. 7 seed Alabama on Monday at noon in San Antonio, Texas, in a first-round game that will be broadcast by ESPN.
The NCAA Tournament appearance is UNC’s 28th in program history and the first under head coach Courtney Banghart, who is in her second season with the program.
“We’re so excited to know that this challenging season will end in the NCAA Tournament, which has been our goal all along,” Banghart said. “This group has worked hard and continued to improve all year, and we’re grateful to head for Texas and keep playing.”
UNC won the 1994 NCAA title and is 47-26 in 27 previous NCAA appearances.
The Tar Heels have faced the Crimson Tide in the tournament on two previous occasions, both in second-round games played in Chapel Hill:
- On March 21, 1993, UNC beat Alabama 74-73 in overtime
- On March 14, 1999, UNC beat Alabama 70-56
The teams met last season in Tuscaloosa, with the Crimson Tide winning 83-77 on Dec. 15, 2019.
