Spring is finally just around the corner, and with spring there is new life. It is a perfect time to reflect and think about ways to improve your overall health. We all have good and bad habits, and nobody is perfect. Habits can be so ingrained in our daily lives that we struggle to break the routines. Start bringing new life into your body and mind by kicking these three common unhealthy habits.

Smoking

This one will seem like a no-brainer, but it is always worth reiterating that quitting smoking will vastly improve your overall health. Lung cancer and emphysema are the first things that come to mind for many people when considering the harmful effects of smoking. However, it’s important to remind yourself that it’s your entire body being affected by the smoke and chemicals from cigarettes, not just your lungs. Smoking also causes cancers of the mouth, throat, bladder, and kidneys. Heart disease, high cholesterol, tooth decay, lower immune system function, and loss of taste and smell are also among the many complications caused by smoking. These complications can also lead to even more complications. For example, restricted blood flow due to heart disease is one of the most common causes of erectile dysfunction (ED). You may then find yourself in need of ED medications, experiencing a strain on your intimate relationship, and dealing with resulting anxiety or depression. Do yourself a favor and stop making excuses and waiting for the “right time”. Talk to your doctor about a plan to quit smoking today.

Sacrificing Sleep

A 2013 survey by the American Psychological Association stated that only 20 percent of adults say their quality of sleep is very good or excellent. Today, this remains a pertinent issue for people who tend to sacrifice a healthy amount of sleep to compensate for their busy lives. Once you stop and think about it, how much time are you really getting back by sleeping less? The lack of sufficient sleep can lead to stress and irritability, depression, a weakened immune system, and cognitive impairment. Having to deal with the effects of sleep deprivation will essentially leave you less productive than you would be if you just got the correct amount of sleep in the first place. Implement a sleep schedule that you can stick to and create a routine. Instead of staying up late to finish that project, go to bed early and find yourself well-rested and ready to do an even better job than you would have before.  

Staying Sedentary

Physical inactivity can lead to a wide range of health issues such as cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and obesity to name a few. There are some instances when sitting all day can be unavoidable, like working a desk job. While you can’t just quit your job because you have to sit all day, there are little things you can do to get yourself moving more each day. If you are a person who has to sit for work, try a standing desk which has become much more common these days. It’s also easy to get used to sitting down during your free time in the spirit of relaxation. This is a potentially dangerous habit especially if you already sit all day at work. Consider squeezing in 30 minutes of exercise at the end of the workday before you sit down on the couch. Gradually increase that time to an hour or more, and you’ll start to feel healthier and that you’ve really earned that couch time.

Remember that breaking habits are always easier said than done. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too much at once, or your chances of success will quickly diminish. Keep trying, reach out for support, and always celebrate the small victories!
