Kirian Shuts Down Wolfpack In Series Opener
RALEIGH, NC – Michael Kirian mowed down the NC State Wolfpack batters, striking out 13 in 7 1/3 innings, as the Cardinals took down the Wolfpack 13-1 at Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh, North Carolina Friday evening.
The Cardinals got on the board early on in the top of the first inning with a Henry Davis two-run blast over the left-center field fence. NC State was shut down in the bottom half of the inning as Michael Kirian shut the Wolfpack hitters three up, three down.
After an early second inning Wolfpack pitching change, Davis ripped a bases-clearing double to increase the Cardinals to 5-0. Kirian was mowing down the Wolfpack batters, as he totaled five strike-outs through the first three innings.
The Wolfpack got their first base runner of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Luca Tresh walked and then advanced to second on an errant throw over to first from Kirian. Kirian then struck out his eighth Wolfpack hitter of the game in the next at-bat, to finish off the inning.
The Cardinals exploded for four runs in the fifth inning as Cameron Masterman drove in Alex Binales with a double off the right-field wall. Wolfpack starter Evan Justice was relieved by Chris Villaman who allowed a Ben Metzinger bases-clearing, three-run double to give the Cardinals a 9-0 lead.
The Cardinals got their second home-run of the game in the top of the seventh, as Lucas Dunn hit a two-run line drive over the left-field wall to increase the lead to 11-0. After the Dunn home-run, Villaman was relieved by freshman Coby Ingle, who got the next three outs with no further damage.
Louisville scored their 12th run of the game on an infield single from Alex Binales. Louisville tried to score two on the play, but Wolfpack short-stop Jose Torres made a great play, gunning down the Cardinals base runner at home. Levi Usher drove a single in the hole between shortstop and third to give the Cardinals a 13-0 lead through seven.
Terrell Tatum broke up Kirian’s no-hitter with a single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the eighth inning. Torres hit a line-drive into left field to drive in the first run of the game for the Pack.
Kirian was replaced by Evan Webster with one out in the eighth inning, leaving the game with 13 strikeouts, two walks, and only two hits. Webster struck out the next two batters to close out the eighth inning. Webster returned in the ninth and closed out the victory for the Cardinals.
Kirian picked up the win for Louisville to improve to 4-0 on the season. Evan Justice suffered the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season after going 4 1/3 innings, striking out five, walking four batters, giving up seven hits, and allowing seven earned runs.
The series will continue Saturday afternoon at Doak Field. The first pitch is set for 2 pm, with RHP Sam Highfill (0-0, 5.17 ERA) scheduled to take the hill for the Wolfpack and RHP Glenn Albanese (2-0, 0.96 ERA) set to pitch for the Cardinals.
