NC State Defeats USF To Advance To Sweet 16
SAN ANTONIO, TX – The top-seeded NC State Wolfpack advanced to NCAA Women’s Tournament Sweet 16 taking down the South Florida Bulls 79-67 in a thrilling round of 32 games.
The first quarter was a battle between the Wolfpack interior game and the Bulls outside shooting as the Wolfpack led 19-18 after the first ten minutes. The Wolfpack were dominating inside as they outscored South Florida 12-0 in the paint. South Florida on the other hand, was 50% from behind the three-point line and did not connect on any two-points shots. Jakia Brown-Turner had a huge first quarter for NC State as she scored nine points early on.
South Florida took their first lead since the score was 3-2 as Beatriz Jordao converted a conventional three-point play to give the Bulls a 21-20 lead early in the second quarter. Over the next few minutes, we saw the teams matching basket-for-basket, as the Bulls held a 28-26 lead with 4:54 remaining in the first half. Elena Tsineke had a great first 15 minutes, as she was a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, as she led the Bulls with nine points early in the game.
The rest of the first half was back-and-forth as South Florida led 36-35 at the break. Jakia Brown-Turner led the Wolfpack at the half with 13 points. Elena Tsineke was the leading scorer for the Bulls with 11 points. We saw each team finding success in different ways in the first half, as NC State outscored USF 16-6 in the paint but USF connected on six three-pointers compared to the Pack’s two.
The Wolfpack came out firing to start the second half, connecting on four of their first five shots to jump out to a seven-point, 47-40 lead, that forced a Bulls timeout. Brown-Turner, Jada Boyd, and Elissa Cunane combined for ten of the first 12 points to start the second half.
Following the timeout, the Wolfpack went cold, not making a field goal for over three minutes to allow South Florida to cut the lead to four (49-45) with 4:47 left in the third quarter.
Following the media timeout, the Pack outscored the Bulls 12-2 over the final four and a half minutes of the third quarter to hold a 59-47 lead after 30 minutes of play. Brown-Turner led the Pack with 16 points and Boyd was right behind with 15 points and nine rebounds. Tsineke led the Bulls with 15 points but was only 2-9 from the field in the third quarter.
Jada Boyd began the third quarter, doing Jada Boyd things, as she grabbed her tenth rebound to collect another double-double on the season. As the Bulls tried to cut into the lead, Kai “Clutchfield” buried a three-pointer to give the Pack a 14-point lead with six minutes to play.
“We are very blessed to have Jada Boyd all year. Like I’ve said all year, we have six starters,” Wolfpack coach Wes Moore said about Boyd following the game.
NC State went cold and did not score for over three minutes and the streaky South Florida Bulls were able to cut the lead to eight with 3:41 to play. The Wolfpack were able to extend the lead to 13 on a Brown-Turner three-pointer with a minute and a half to play.
The Bulls cut the deficit to ten on a Tsineke three-pointer but that was the closest the Bulls could get, as the Pack knocked down some late-game free-throws to close out the game.
NC State was led by Brown-Turner with 19 points and Boyd and Cunane both with double-doubles respectively. Boyd scored 18 points and grabbed ten rebounds and Cunane scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kai Crutchfield had a good day from behind the three-point line going a perfect 3-for-3 to give her 11 points. The leading scorers for the Bulls were Tsineke with 22 points and Elisa Pinzan with 18 points.
NC State owned the interior as they outscored South Florida 30-18 in the paint. The Wolfpack also had 15 assists as a team with Crutchfield and Raina Perez combining for ten of those.
“Without Kayla Jones out there, I thought some other people stepped up and showed some strong leadership today,” NC State coach Wes Moore said following the game.
The Wolfpack, (22-2, 12-2 ACC) moves on to take on the winner of Belmont versus Indiana in the Sweet Sixteen.
