Elán House Owner Shannon Hill Turns Making Wedding Bouquets Into Floral Business

Raleigh, NC – Shannon Hill grew up watching her mother in the garden and making florals for weddings, so the gift of florals and making bouquets came naturally to her. Hill grew up being the youngest of four children in Eastern North Carolina but her family had roots all along the East Coast. They visited New York and New Jersey often during the summer. After high school, Hill attended  North Carolina Central University studying Political Science. Hill’s interest in florals took off after making some bouquets for her friends’ weddings. 

For a while, Hill put florals on the back burner, but in 2019, Elán House was set into action from her house. Elán House is a sole-proprietorship and such a special company to Hill, including the name of the company. “My mother’s maiden name is House, felt like well I learned all of this from her, I’ll just go with House”. Elán means stylish and elegant which is what Hill wants her company to represent, so she put the two together.

Branding the company in the right way was another important aspect for Hill knowing she is an African American starting her own business. “I decided to be myself and put my personality into my business and if they like it, they like it, and if they don’t, that’s okay too.” Despite starting her business in the middle of a pandemic, Hill did not face many setbacks other than not being able to attend potential events to grow her company. She used this as an opportunity to be different from normal flower shops. 

Elán House currently offers two services, a custom arrangement as well as dried wall installation both in various colors and sizes. However, if you would like a flower arrangement a little bit more frequently Elán House offers a subscription custom to you, picking how often you want delivery, the flowers, and the delivery method.

A lady reached out to her company on Instagram wanting a bouquet to brighten up her home in April of 2020. This is when the idea of contactless delivery popped into her head. So, by Mother’s Day, Elán House had 50 orders to fill. Hill is still focused on growing her business, “I didn’t expect things to take off as they did right away so that’s been a little bit of a shocker. That moment still hits me every now and then thinking, Is this really happening?” Hill hopes to expand her business by the end of this year, moving into an actual flower shop and hoping to offer other services, although it is important to her to keep everything she offers coming from nature’s true beauty.
