Blue Devils Defeat No. 11 Georgia Tech, 9-7
DURHAM, NC – Duke baseball completed their weekend series against Georgia Tech on Sunday with a 9-7 win. After two wins from the Yellow Jackets over the past two days Duke came into the DBAP with a new mindset putting runs on the board very early on in the matchup.
Ethan Murray scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second after an RBI single from Wil Hoyle, advancing Michael Rothenburg to second, starting the game with a score of 1-0. The following inning Yellow Jackets Luke Waddell, Justyn-Henry Malloy, and Kevin Prada all added runs to the board, allowing Georgia Tech to take the lead 3-1.
In the bottom of the third the Blue Devils came back scoring two home runs from Peter Matt and Chris Crabtree, tying the two teams 3-3.
Duke responded by impressively putting up five runs in the bottom of the frame and two more runs in the following inning, breaking the tie and taking the score to 8-4.
These five runs from Duke were the most hits in an inning thus far throughout the season.
The Devils were able to continue playing great offensive baseball adding their last run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning after catcher Michael Rothenburg homered to right field, making the final score of the game 9-7.
Wil Hoyle’s had a career-high with three total RBI’s, and the three home runs from Peter Matt, Chris Crabtree, and Michael Rothenburg were the most ever scored in a game this season.
Pitcher Jack Carey started and led on the mound for the Blue Devils pitching a total of three innings, with four outs, and four earned runs. Sophomore pitchers Marcus Johnson and Jimmy Loper made appearances on the mound in Sunday’s matchup.
